Microsoft Azure ExpressRoute

Establish a scalable and cost-controlled connection to Microsoft cloud services, such as Microsoft Azure, Office 365, and Dynamics 365.

Direct Access to the Microsoft Cloud

Microsoft has partnered with EdgeConneX to offer private, secure access to ExpressRoute locally in Munich, Phoenix and now Portland, along with other virtual SDN enabled options in multiple Edge Data Centers across North America and Europe.

Microsoft’s ExpressRoute lets you extend your on-premises networks into the Microsoft cloud over a dedicated private connection. With ExpressRoute, you can establish connection to Microsoft cloud services, such as Microsoft Azure, Office 365, and Dynamics 365. The service connects directly to your WAN, offering improved speed and increased reliability, along with greater security as the public internet is completely bypassed.

This solution enables direct network links within the local data center, allowing virtual connections to be provisioned real time, on-demand, through the online portal or another network-connected device.

How Microsoft Azure ExpressRoute Works

Microsoft’s Azure ExpressRoute extends your on-premise networks to the Microsoft cloud via a dedicated private connection. The service connects directly to your WAN, offering improved speed and increased reliability, along with greater security as the public internet is completely bypassed.

Azure ExpressRoute Availability

Microsoft has partnered with EdgeConneX to offer private, secure access to ExpressRoute locally in Munich and Phoenix, along with other virtual SDN enabled options in multiple Edge Data Centers across North America and Europe.

We’ve partnered with industry-leading SDN providers like Megaport, PacketFabric, Console Connect, NetFoundry, and others at these non-native on-ramp locations, bringing private cloud access solutions to the edge. These solutions leverage extensive software platforms to control an on-demand network infrastructure, supplying elastic bandwidth for virtual connections to Azure and enabling full automation and service flexibility.

Key Benefits of SDN Partners:

  • Automatic on-demand provisioning
  • Flexible service terms
  • Full network management control to help align to the changing needs of your network

Additional Benefits

Connections to ExpressRoute are dedicated, offering consistent network performance, and not subject to traffic throughput issues often experienced when using public internet. This leads to better reliability from not only the underlying network and cloud platform, but also the applications as well.

Using localized ExpressRoute connections help eliminate the need for expensive long haul transport services. In addition, using ExpressRoute often leads to significant cost benefits and lower overall TCO when transferring data to and from Azure.

Once connected ExpressRoute through the EdgeConneX data center, bandwidths can be changed on-demand, allowing the flexibility needed to upgrade and downgrade connections as network demands warrant. This instant capacity management, enabled by the Megaport software platform, can be done anytime, on any device.

ExpressRoute provides a direct connection between your internal network and the Azure Cloud, completely bypassing the public Internet. This keeps your network traffic isolated from potential threats and helps eliminate other security concerns.

How to Order ExpressRoute

1. Start by opening a Microsoft Azure account, and referencing all necessary next steps for service activation on the ExpressRoute website.

2. Engage directly with EdgeConneX to start a connection request to ExpressRoute.

3. After all physical connections are in place, activate your virtual connections through the Azure portal, or for virtual SDN connections, activate through the SDN provider’s portal.

4. Complete your end-to-end virtual interface with the Azure cloud.
